How to Make Your Characters Believable By Dana Delamar

There are many theories and techniques for building great characters. I like to mix and match from various sources. Here are some of my favorites:
Archetypes: Many characters fall into or are a blend of common archetypes: the Bad Boy, the Warrior, the Seductress, the Waif. Studying these archetypes and their common characteristics can help you figure out who your character is, what sort of decisions they’ll make, and what role they’ll play in your story. A good resource for learning the archetypes is “The Complete Writer's Guide to Heroes and Heroines: Sixteen Master Archetypes,” by Tami D. Cowden, Carolyn LaFever, and Sue Viders.
Zodiac signs: Another fun way of figuring out who your characters are is to read up on the various signs of the zodiac and figure out which one best reflects your character. Some great resources are “The Secret Language of Birthdays” and “The Secret Language of Relationships” by Gary Goldschnieder and Joost Elffers. Another popular book is “Sun Signs” by Linda Goodman.
If you’re writing romance, once you’ve chosen zodiac signs for your hero and heroine, you may have fun reading “Sextrology” and “Cosmic Coupling” by Stella Starsky and Quinn Cox. These books go in-depth into the sexuality of the various zodiac signs, and “Cosmic Coupling” gives detailed descriptions of how any two given signs will interact when it comes to sex and relationships.
Research: Figure out what your character’s profession is, and then research it! What we do for a living heavily influences who we are and our worldview--and vice versa. Learn the details of how your character does their job. You won’t need to put all those details on the page (please don’t!) but giving your readers a sprinkling of the specialized jargon or procedures that your characters use will go a long way toward making them seem real.
If possible, try to meet with experts in your character’s field. For example, if your character is a cop, see if you can interview an officer or go on a ride-along. This will also give you a chance to make friends with an expert who may be willing to vet the details of your book (or answer questions) to make sure you got them right.
People you know: You know plenty of interesting people. Would any of them make great characters? Do they have fascinating or distinctive behaviors, mannerisms, beliefs, or speech patterns that you can give to a character?
Character interviews: Sit down and “interview” your character. What makes them tick? Why do they do the things they do? What matters to them? In a crisis, how will they react? What lengths will they go to if they feel threatened? What’s their favorite book, movie, ice cream flavor? How many times have they been in love--and with whom? And why?
There are a whole bunch of templates on the Internet that have reams of character questions that you can fill out. Aside from establishing your character’s age, height, build, hair color, eye color and other physical characteristics, these templates can help you dig into your characters and learn what’s going on with them.
Some places to start:
Character diamond: Another technique is to develop a character diamond. There are a couple different ways to do this:
o   The first method is to assign a character two primary characteristics, one quirky or unexpected characteristic, and another that masks their greatest fear or flaw. These form the four points of the diamond. You’re looking for characteristics that don’t change from moment to moment, but rather are stable. Think of traits, not moods. For example, your character’s primary two characteristics might be Loyal and Pessimistic. Their quirky characteristic might be High-Strung, and their mask characteristic might be Aloof (because they’re afraid to get close to anyone).
o   The second method is to focus on how the character’s traits influence the plot. With this method, the four points of the diamond would be: 1) the flaw that masks the character’s greatest fear, 2) the character’s biggest inner fear, 3) the character’s biggest need, and 4) the plan the character devises to achieve that need. This plan of course, doesn’t work as intended!
Some useful resources for developing your own character diamonds:
Goals, Motivations, and Conflicts (GMC): Understanding what motivates your characters will not only help you create believable characters, it will also help you create a believable plot. What are your character’s goals? Why does your character have these goals (motivation)? What is standing in your character’s way of achieving these goals (conflict)? How do your character’s GMCs intersect with the GMCs of other characters? Which characters will be allies, and which will be foes? A great resource for understanding how to apply GMCs to your characters is “GMC: Goal, Motivation and Conflict” by Debra Dixon.

Bittersweet Dreams, An Incredible Journey Of Love, Surrender, and Passions! Secret Sexy Passions Series Book 2

New Release!!

Sean is an amazing confident young man that knows what he wants. He works hard to become a Navy SEAL! And, of course, he falls for a young beautiful girl, Sofia!

Sofia has been through several foster homes and is now in his home! She has locked up her heart and erected a wall. Will he be able to knock it down and touch her soul?

Life throws lots of curves and knocks them off the tracks. Will their love survive the obstacles blocking the road to HEA?

Small little excerpt!!

Sean walks down to the last apartment in the corner. He knocks on the door, listening for any noise inside or outside.

Oh, wow! Someone is knocking and I have to finish getting ready to go to work. Shit! I wish Carol was here. Where did she go?

Sofia pulls on the sundress that’s across her chair. She slips her feet into her slippers and walks out of her room. She looks through the peephole and sees a black shirt, wide shoulders, and she looks up his neck to his face. Hell, I know that’s Sean. The shades don’t disguise his jawline. It’s him! Her jaw drops open, surprised. Wow, omg. He’s here. It’s Sean. What does he want now after all of this time? She pulls back, and leans on the door, chewing her lower lip.

I know I heard some steps. It has to be my Sofia. Sean leans forward and knocks again on the door, looking at the peephole. He slowly smiles at her.

Sofia looks into the peephole again and sees him smiling. Hell, he knows I’m home. She bites her lower lip.

Sofia opens the door and looks at him. She crosses her arms and waits for him to talk.

Sean grins at her and looks her over. Oh yeah, my Sofia looks the same, if not better. “Baby Girl, I’m home.”

Sofia glares at him and turns away. She walks into the living room. She stops at the sofa, and rests her hands on her hips. “Really, you're home? That means what?” She raises her eyebrow at him. She clenches her hands on her hips to control her rampant emotions of joy, anger, and hurt.

Storm Warnings By Terri Hubbard Carle

I'm introducing to you this
awesome love story!

Liz never dreamed she would see him again. If she did, she just knew she would never tell him about their baby. If he had never wanted the baby back when she was pregnant, he didn’t need to know.
Life has a way of coming back around, when it is meant to be, and no matter what we do, we cannot stop destiny. What is meant to be will be.
Tom is devastated by the loss of all he knows and loves. He eventually learns that not everything is as it seems to be. Life is not always black and white, there is plenty of grey you miss if that is all you see. When the two see each other again, it is under the worst of circumstances, and definitely nothing like either had ever imagined before. Somehow, the truth sets them both free.

Sexcation by Elise Whyles

Sexcation by Elise Whyles

Tony Richards has it all— or at least that's what his friends say. With money, prestige and women falling all over him, something is still missing. When his best friend Shelly tells him about a unique resort, Tony is both thrilled and apprehensive.
Bad boy Chet Monroe has spent the last two years working hard to afford a week long trip to Aphrodite's Island resort. He's not looking for anything special, just a chance to relax. Until he arrives and meets the man of his dreams.
When Tony sees Chet, he's instantly smitten with the handsome, if somewhat rugged man with the tattoos and attitude, but it’s his chance to have his ultimate fantasy. Can the rancher and the bartender find forever when their week is up?

Excerpt:

You need to get laid.” Shelly’s annoying voice echoed in his ear as the gentle swell of the sea rocked the private yacht currently easing into dock. Tony stared out over the blue-green sea with a detached sort of fascination. A narrow strip of beach followed the sea line as far as he could see. Lush green trees reached for the sky. He sure as hell wasn’t in Wyoming anymore. The crackle of a microphone drew his attention to the tall woman at the helm.

A peach colored bikini barely covered her breasts, her long hair was pulled back in a thick braid and designer sunglasses covered her eyes. “Good morning everyone. I hope your flight was pleasant. Before we disembark, I have a couple of things to go over with you.”

Tony fidgeted in his seat, fighting the nervousness in his belly. He wasn’t so sure this was a good idea, not that he’d been all fired up about it when Shelly had handed him the ticket and told him to go. He adjusted the brim of his Stetson, his eyes looking out over the tropical island. Nope, it had to be one of Shelly’s worst ideas ever.

“This is Aphrodite’s Island, a specialty resort. We cater to a select group, dealing in sexual fantasies. To ensure everyone is safe and happy with their stay, we do have rules.” She held up a fist with her index finger extended. “One—if the person you are involved with says no, they mean no. It’s not a maybe, or I’ll think about it, unless its a fantasy you’ve already discussed and have agreed to the circumstance before hand. Disregarding this will ensure you are penalized to the fullest extent of the law.”

She lifted a second finger and inhaled. “Two—we ask that when you step into your fantasy you come up with a safe word to ensure your partner doesn’t take things too far beyond your comfort level. Our intent is to provide the best experience of your life, but in a way that respects everyone’s desires.”

Tony leaned forward on the plush leather chair at the hard note in the woman’s voice. “For health and safety reason, we do supply condoms in every room. We do not encourage unprotected sex. Are there any questions?”

“Yes ma’am,” a deep, smoky drawl from behind Tony sent a shiver of pleasure up his spine.

“Of course.”

“Is there any way off the island if we don’t want to continue?”

Tony turned in his seat to stare at the speaker. Thick black hair curled over the man’s shoulders. A large black and white tattoo of a wolf covered one shoulder and arm. Several others peaked from beneath the tank-top he wore. A pair of worn, faded jeans encased his legs, covering the tops of a pair of heavy boots as he lounged against the wall.

Tony felt the kick of attraction in his gut. Hot and tight, it twisted him into a knot of want. Turning, he face forward.  As sexy as he was, the ladies would be falling all over themselves to get into his bed. What a waste of man.

“We book the stays in a seven day rotation. Unless it’s an emergency or something very pressing, we do not have a routine ferry. Unfortunately, this means you do have to remain on the island for the duration. However, if you chose to step away from your fantasy, we do offer a non-sexual holiday.”

Yeah, non-sexual my ass. I’d love to have him riding me. Tony sighed, his mind racing as the woman continued on with details about transportation. He heard a couple of the other passengers ask questions but paid them little mind.

Content Warning: graphic sex, some violence

Excerpt:

A wisp of air blew Tabitha's curls around her face. The urge to scream boiled up within her. "Leave me alone. Don't talk to me while I'm wide awake too. Give it a rest." She gritted her teeth. "This is only my imagination." She watched her lips say the words.

Unexpectedly, a buzzing rang out, and she jumped, her heart fluttering.

"I'm going to faint from fright." She leaned against the counter top, breathing heavily. She pointed at herself in the mirror. "Get a hold of yourself. The buzz is only my cellphone alarm." Tabitha shook her head, tossing her hair all over her head. "I look like a mad woman. Oh yeah, I am one." She laughed almost hysterically.

Going back to her nightstand, she checked the time on her cellphone.

"Oh no, it's after eight AM already. Damn, I didn't hear the first alarm." I'm going to be late, again.

She tossed the phone toward the bed. It bounced off. She moved to catch it, but missed. It nearly hit the floor then without her touching it, it stopped, moved midair, and landed on the bed.

Tabitha stared at it for several seconds. "No way. That didn't happen. I prayed for these crazy things to end." She buried her face in her hands and sat on the edge of the bed.

I've got to get to work. Pulling her nightgown over her head, she tossed it to the floor. Her energy drained, she plopped back down on the bed.

"I've gotta focus on work. I must be strong." She stared at a painting on the wall. "Not again. I won't go through this stuff again." She allowed her mind to relax, and as she studied the beautiful colors of the painting, her eyes shut.

A cool breeze blew across her heated skin. "My child, all is not forsaken to you."

"Shut up! Do you hear me?" Tabitha put her hands over her ears and shook her head wildly. "Just shut up." The thunder rumbled again as if to emphasis her words.

I have to get up now, I'm late. Tabitha rushed to the shower. The glass door slammed behind her. She turned the water on then leaned against the tile wall and closed her eyes.

The hot water and steam was soothing—it felt wonderful. As the water washed over her, she thought of the reoccurring voice and the dreams which felt too real. The voice had spoken to her on and off all throughout her life, but for the last three years, it had been silent. The dreams, however, had continued throughout the years, and as of late they'd been more intense, more sensual. The dreams were far more disquieting than the voice.

Suddenly, her shower stopped, and her world went into a spin. She was falling, hurtling to the ground. She reached out, desperate to grab hold of something to stop her. There was nothing to catch onto before she hit bottom.

Complete darkness made her blind. The smell of the damp earth surrounded her, filling her lungs. No longer was she in her bathroom. "Help me, let me out of here. Help me, dear God help me," Tabitha screamed. She pushed at the ground above her, the walls next to her. "No, this can't be happening."

She hit the hard, damp ground. It hurt her hands but she continued to slam against the hard earth. I hate dark, cold places. Her fingers bled, the coppery smell filling her prison. This place could be her grave. Am I dead?

Then an overpowering smell of salt water mixed with her blood took over her senses, making her gag. "What's happening?" In a flash, she was back in her shower, on the floor with the hot water running over her. Stunned, she got up and sat on the shower's bench. Her legs were wobbly. "God help me." She moaned, rocking back and forth to soothe herself.

Reluctantly, she stood to rinse herself off. Shaking, she stepped out of the shower as if in a trance. What am I going to do? I can't tell anyone this is happening to me. I'd be committed. She picked up a towel and dried herself. Again, her world went dark, and she fell, hitting the tile floor. Her head slammed into something hard.

Silky sheets entwined between her legs. A fire crackled nearby. Warm, strong arms embraced her, pulling her tight. Wake up, I've got to wake up. Her mind grasped for reality.

"What troubles you, my love?" A man kissed her shoulder. "I need you, my mate, you make me whole." The man whispered soothing words to her. His voice, his words, made her tingle to her very core. Her womb ached with the need to have him fill her. He spoke to her with such love it made her yearn for more of him.
